James G. “Jim” Souza, III was born on January 10, 1965, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. His father, a letter carrier, brought the family to Clearwater, Florida, in April 1969. The oldest of four children, Jim attended Oldsmar Elementary and St. Cecilia Parochial School. In 1983, he graduated from Clearwater Central Catholic High School.

James G. “Jim” Souza, III

He received his Associate of Arts degree from St. Petersburg Junior College in 1985, and while there he served in the student government as a second-year senator. He was also on the Dean’s List. Jim then went on to the University of Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1987. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and was active in many campus events while working full-time in a canning factory.

Upon graduation, Jim joined Michael Dukakis’ presidential campaign in 1987. He set up field offices in several states including California, Iowa, Michigan, and Florida. He truly enjoyed his time in Atlanta, in preparation for the 1988 Democratic Convention.

Jim later returned to Florida to serve as a political and media consultant with The Nature Conservancy. In 1990, he played a significant role in the political lobbying campaign promoting “Preservation 2000,” a landmark $3 billion environmental land preservation program approved by the Florida Legislature. He later built on that achievement by steering an enormously successful grass-roots political campaign for a $100 million land preservation program in Hillsborough County that passed with more than 70% of the voters supporting it. He also worked as a media consultant to a number of congressional campaigns and is still an ardent supporter of sensible political and social causes.

Jim attended law school at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. While there, he began exploring his career as a trial attorney by participating in mock trials and obtained a third-year Alabama Law Card, which allowed him to represent indigent clients in court cases. He was also on the Dean’s List and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1994.

Yearning to return home to the Tampa Bay area, he accepted a position to begin his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender in Hillsborough County and treated his tenure there as a “fourth year” of law school as he gained valuable jury trial experience.

In 1995, he formed The Law Offices of James G. Souza, III, P.A. Initially, the firm solely handled criminal cases, but over time, it evolved into a trial practice encompassing personal injury and other civil litigation matters. He is as reputable as a brain injury attorney as he is as a dog bite attorney in Tampa, FL. Today the firm is widely known as a personal injury law firm in Tampa, FL.

A Florida Bar member since 1994, Jim has earned many accolades for his legal standing and his charitable works. He is an “AV” rated lawyer noted in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, the highest rating they confer on practicing lawyers for legal competence and ethical standing. He has also received the highly coveted “10/10 rating” from AVVO, a leading lawyer review company.
